After thorough testing, I can’t recommend this particular small-talk template:
Me: How’s it going?
Coworker: It’s going.
Me: Well, that’s better than it being stopped.
Coworker: silence

I’m a believer that new and different exchanges should be used more frequently. It sure beats the usual bullcrap:
Person: “How you doing?”
Me: “Good. How are you?”
Person: “Good. Thanks.”
Next time, I’m going to try:
Person: “How are you?”
Me: “Just getting over a bout of depression, but I’m alright. Not suicidal anymore. Internet porn can really change your outlook on the evening. How are you?”
Person: “Uh….OK I guess.”
Me: “Good. Ya know, I always thought your mother was a really attractive woman. Great ass. Is she 60 now?”
Person: “Uh…She’s 55.”
Me: “Well I bet she’ll still look great when she’s 60. Have a good one!”
